Prisoners now ripped off by charging them excessively for phone calls

Correctional facilities in the USA are charging prisoners for phone calls up to 60% in excess of the cost of the call, and pocketing the money! These are prisoners who have almost no resources and are lucky if they even know someone who wants a phone call from them.

  1. Rates are even higher than the 60% you quote. If a local or long distance phone call from a phone booth costs $0.50 for 10 minutes, and a county jail charges $2.50, that's more like 500%. That is the norm. Even more difficult, in many systems, it can take weeks for an inmate's family to find out how to set up an account, put up a deposit and wait for it to be processed. Inmate families are being gouged.
